Central Floridians Get Thousands In Unclaimed Money

The state of Florida owes 8 million people in Florida cash, and you could be one of them.
The Bureau of Unclaimed Property usually takes in about 50 calls an hour, but during one hour on Wednesday morning, operators fielded more than 450 calls during WESH 2's special phone bank.
To see if the state owes you money, call 1-88-VALUABLE (888-258-2253). People in Central Florida have claimed about $30,000 so far.
One woman alone collected $20,000, and another woman in Winter Park is getting $800.
Even WESH 2 I-Team reporter Michelle Meredith is one of the lucky ones. She found out that the state owes her $59.20 from an old insurance policy.
Meredith also toured the state's vault, which is full of items such as fur coats, jewelry, thousands in cash and old Confederate dollars.
The items are usually sent to the state from banks around Florida who are left with unclaimed safe-deposit boxes.
