New Health-Care Plan To Take Effect

15.11.2006 22:35 Insurance News

Health care insurance reform comes to Massachusetts on Jan. 1.

A new poll out Wednesday shows two out of three residents support the overall idea of requiring everyone to have medical insurance. Almost 90 percent of those polled like the plan to cover uninsured children by expanding MassHealth. But it's important to know the reform will not lead to changes for everyone.

Businesses with 10 or more employees will be required to provide health insurance and pay "fair and reasonable" costs or pay a fine of $295 a year per employee. An individual making up to $29,000 a year is eligible for help. A family of four making up to $60,000 a year can get assistance on a sliding scale. Those numbers are three times the federal poverty limit.

The requirement is that individuals must purchase insurance or pay a fine equal of half of what the insurance would have cost.
